There are interesting observations and anecdotes, the writing is engaging, and there is enough inside scoop to appeal to those looking for a bit of gossip, but there are no bombshells here and it is doubtful the book will change many minds about this polarizing figure. This does not mean the work is without merit, however, for Hillary Clinton has much to say about her experience as first lady, which is the primary focus of the book. Those interested in these experiences and her commentary on them will find the book worth reading; those looking for revelations will be disappointed.
Beginning with a brief outline of her childhood, college years, introduction to politics, and her courtship with Bill Clinton, Clinton covers a wide variety of topics: life on the campaign trail, her troubled tenure as leader of the President's Task Force on National Health Care Reform, meeting with foreign leaders, and her work on human rights, to name a few. By necessity, she also addresses the various scandals that plagued the administration, from Travelgate to Whitewater to impeachment, though she does not go into great detail about each one; rather, she seems content to simply state her case and move on without trying to settle too many old scores.
Along the way, she offers many apologies, though perhaps not the kind some would expect. She does not shy away from her "vast right-wing conspiracy" comment, for instance, though she does wish that she had expressed herself differently. Regarding the Monica Lewinsky scandal, she maintains that her husband initially lied to her, as he did the rest of the country, and did not come clean until two days prior to his grand jury testimony. Calling his betrayal "the most devastating, shocking and hurtful experience of my life," she explains what the aftermath was like personally and why she has elected to stand by her man. In all, Living History is an informative book that goes a long way toward humanizing one of the most recognizable, and controversial, women of our age.

Whether or not you believe that the Clintons were victims of what Hillary calls a "vast right-wing conspiracy," this memoir has enough information and personality to appeal to people on both sides of the political fence. Most will not be surprised by Clinton's reading style, as it is similar (though not nearly as formal) to the manner in which she has delivered many television addresses. Her Midwestern accent is evenly pitched and pleasant. She easily laughs at herself, and fluctuations in her delivery render her emotions nearly palpable. Indeed, the casual straightforwardness of her delivery will engender a sense of trust and respect in listeners. Though she does not offer much new material, she is adept at disclosing many "backstage" details-from the personal, like her inner feelings about the Lewinsky scandal ("the most devastating, shocking and hurtful experience of my life"), to the humorous, like the time a mischievous Boris Yeltsin tried to coax her into sampling moose-lip soup. Her devotion to Chelsea, Bill and to her country feels genuine, as do her hopes for future. All in all, her infectious sense of optimism and unwavering energy shine through in her delivery and will leave listeners with a new respect for the former First Lady.

If you check out Ray Dubuque's other review (also 5 stars), you will find it is of an anti-Catholic screed. Dubuque seems not to understand that German Protestants totally rolled over for the Nazis and indeed constituted the majority of their power base, nor did Protestant Britain or America do anything significant to save Europe's Jews, such as allowing them to immigrate en masse to the USA and British Empire. Dubuque needs to read more, think more, and keep his fingers away from keyboards until he can acquire a reasoned view of Catholicism. The Reformation and Counter-Reformation were pretty much settled 400 years ago.

I recall reading a review of Cornwell's "Hitler's Pope" by the noted Hungarian historian, Istvan Deak, who pointed to numerous factual errors, e.g. Admiral Horthy, the dictator of Hungary, was a member of that country's sizeable Calvinist minority, not a Catholic as portrayed by Cornwell. Also, Deak raised the issue of Pius doing next to nothing to intervene on behalf of the Polish Catholics, who suffered treatment at the hands of the Nazis nearly as bad as the Jews. It is my understanding that just as many Polish Gentiles as Polish Jews were murdered by the Nazis, and that had they won the war the Nazis would have reduced the Poles to the status of semi-literate serfs.

Given the prevailing morality of the pre-WW2 era in which some degree (appalling by today's standards) of sectarianism and anti-Semitism was universally socially acceptable and given that Jews were often associated with avowed enemies of the Church (Communists in the Soviet Union, secular-socialists in Poland, anti-clericalists in France)is it any wonder that the Catholic Church did not do as much in hindsight as it could or should have to intervene against Nazi racism and genocide? One crass way of looking at things is "what had the Jews ever done positive for the Church today?" If Pius was feeble in protecting Polish Catholics, how could one expect him and the German bishops to go out of their way to protect the Jews?

The first part of this book (around 60 pages) is about the general stage of the war in the air during World War II, explaining the way that RAF Bomber Command introduced the doctrine of "area bombing". There is a comprehensive description of previous terrible raids like those of Hamburg, Wuppertal and others before Irving moves into the main theme. No aspect of that great raid is left out of his analysis and the text balances finely between the human drama and the operational analysis. I found very interesting Irving's explanations for Lufwtaffe's inaction during the destruction of Dresden, as well as the heroism of common people and the terrific organisational skills of the German state regarding the firefighting methods and the care of the victims.

Moreover, he was injured in a July 20, 1944, bombing attempt on his life, and both of his forearms were swollen and swathed in bandages or compresses; yet the diaries include an entry apparently written that day. Historian Irving, in his new translation of The Secret Diaries of Hitler's Doctor, to be published next month, quotes Physician Theo Morell as saying, in a representative entry from Oct. 30,1944, "The Führer confided in me that after this renewed attack of pain the trembling in his leg and hands was much more violent." Most of the artifacts in the Egyptian Room of the British Museum are there through Belzoni's efforts.
- Sir Austen Henry Layard: Old Testament Archaeologist. An English adventurer working almost singlehandedly, Layard excavated and identified the biblical city of Nineveh, and the Royal Library and Archives of the Assyrian King Assurbanipal. Layard made sensational finds, became a best-selling author and popular hero, then grew tired and left archaeology—all by the age of 35.
- Heinrich Schliemann: Homeric Adventurer. Born to poverty, Schliemann was a self-made millionaire who was obsessed with proving that Homer's Iliad and Odyssey had a historical basis. Schliemann employed
brutal excavation methods that severely damaged his sites, and made outrageous claims about his finds. Nevertheless, he was able to identify Homeric Troy and uncover Mycenaean civilization.
- John Lloyd Stephens: Travel Adventure Writer. Encouraged by the success of his travel books, Stephens journeyed to Central America with artist Frederick Catherwood, where they investigated major Maya cities and concluded that Maya civilization was of indigenous origin. Stephens's two Incidents of Travel books became bestsellers and are still in print.
Professor Fagan underscores the adventuresome nature of these early archaeologists with a variety of anecdotes.
- Howard Carter, who discovered Tutankhamen's tomb in 1922, referred to Belzoni's time as "the great days of Egyptology, when, if you didn't like one of your opponents, you went for him with a gun."
- George Smith, returning from an expedition to collect cuneiform tablets, died while crossing the Syrian Desert. The last entry in his diary was, "The tablets are in the bottom of my leather boot."
Deciphering Egyptian hieroglyphs was largely the work of one man: Jean François Champollion. It is said that in 1822, when Champollion realized he had succeeded, he ran out of his apartment shouting, "I've got it," and promptly fainted. In 1828, Champollion traveled up the Nile and became one of the first scholars able to read inscriptions on temple and tomb walls.
Tomb Robbing Slowly Yields to Science
Despite its accomplishments, 19th-century archaeology was characterized by primitive excavation methods and widespread looting.
A major theme of Part II, "Science and Civilization," is the gradual improvement in research techniques, and in the ethical treatment of ruins and artifacts, that enabled archaeology to become a true professional discipline.
In 1842 King Wilhelm IV of Prussia sponsored an expedition to Egypt led by Karl Lepsius. Carefully collecting and recording over 15,000 artifacts, members of this expedition set a new standard of archaeological reportage and scientific investigation.
Subsequent excavations in the 1870s evidenced a new archaeological conscience in the eastern Mediterranean.
Flinders Petrie raised Egyptology to new heights and developed highly effective cross-dating methods still used today.
Leonard Woolley refined ways of organizing large excavations using numerous workers and only a few experts.
Robert Koldewey made a major scientific advance when he mastered the art of excavating unfired mudbrick walls. Between 1899 and 1932, Koldewey reconstructed part of Nebuchadnezzar's city.
These developments culminated with the discovery of the tomb of Egyptian Pharaoh Tutankhamun. Beginning in 1922, this work was carried out under very primitive working conditions with minimal technology. However, Egyptologists from around the world participated in the recovery effort in an unprecedented show of cooperation. Afterward, archaeology's emphasis on making spectacular finds gave way to slower, more deliberate research aimed at understanding the dynamics of early civilizations.
Dr. Fagan details other events including the:
- decipherment of Maya glyphs, one of the greatest scientific achievements of the 20th century
- discovery in China of the terracotta soldiers found in the burial mound of the Emperor Shi Huangdi
- discovery of other early societies including the Hittites of what is now Turkey, the Inka of the Peruvian Andes, the Nubia of Egypt, and the - - Harappan of present-day Pakistan.

Archaeology as we know it dates from about 1940. In just over 60 years, the field has become a fully mature science, one whose practitioners work closely with experts in humanities, social sciences, and physical sciences.
No longer can you "just go out and dig," Professor Fagan explains. "Instead, you select a problem, and apply to it such things as knowledge of architecture, agriculture, information from food supplies, etc. As an archaeologist, you're just one part of a complicated, historical jigsaw."
About Your Teacher
Professor Fagan was born and educated in Britain and speaks with a British accent. He earned recognition as a pioneer of multidisciplinary African history through excavations in Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia) from 1959-1965.
He received his university's Distinguished Teaching Award in 2000, and was awarded the Public Service Award of the Society of Professional Archaeologists and the Public Education Award of the Society for American Archaeology.
He was a Guggenheim Fellow in 1973, edited The Oxford Companion to Archaeology, and has written several books.

Welcome to the science wars—a long-running battle over the status of scientific knowledge that began in ancient Greece, raged furiously among scientists, social scientists, and humanists during the 1990s, and has re-emerged in today's conflict between science and religion over issues such as evolution.

Five Centuries of the Science Wars
In 24 half-hour lectures, Science Wars explores the history of competing conceptions of scientific knowledge and their implications for science and society from the onset of the Scientific Revolution in the 1600s to the present. It may seem that the accelerating pace of discoveries, inventions, and unexpected insights into nature during this period guarantees the secure foundations of scientific inquiry, but that is far from true.

The scientific method: In the 1600s the English philosopher Francis Bacon defined the scientific method in its classic form: the use of inductive reasoning to draw conclusions from an exhaustive body of facts. But "no scientist has ever been a strict Baconian," says Professor Goldman. "If you followed that, you would get nowhere."A "heated" debate: Around 1800 the dispute over the nature of heat was resolved in favor of the theory that heat is motion and not a substance given off during burning. But then the French mathematical physicist Joseph Fourier wrote a set of equations that accurately described how heat behaves regardless of what it "really" is, which, Fourier contended, was not a scientific question at all. Paradigm shifts: The publication in 1962 of Thomas Kuhn's The Structure of Scientific Revolutions precipitated a radical change in attitudes toward scientific knowledge, prompted by Kuhn's insight that science is not an entirely rational enterprise, and that its well-established theories (or paradigms) are overturned in a revolutionary, nonlogical process.
Postmodern putdown: The postmodern attack on science as a privileged mode of inquiry made some headway in the late 20th century. But the credibility of the movement wilted in 1996, when a postmodern journal unwittingly published a spoof by physicist Alan Sokal, purporting to prove that physical theory was socially constructed. Sokal then exposed his piece as a parody.
In the penultimate lecture of the course, Professor Goldman considers intelligent design—the argument that evolution can't account for the immense complexity of life and that a master designer must be at work. He approaches this topical debate by asking: What are the minimum criteria that define a hypothesis as scientific, and does intelligent design qualify? Having already covered five centuries of the science wars in the previous lectures, you will analyze this controversy with a set of tools that allows you to see the issues in a sharp, new light.
What Is Reality?
"Fasten your seatbelts," says Professor Goldman at the outset of Lecture 21—an advisory that applies equally to the whole course, which covers an astonishing array of ideas and thinkers. Throughout, Professor Goldman never loses his narrative thread, which begins 2,400 years ago with Plato's allegorical battle between "the gods" and "the earth giants"—between those for whom knowledge is universal, necessary, and certain; and those for whom it cannot be so and is based wholly on experience.The problem of what constitutes scientific knowledge can be illustrated with one of the most famous and widely accepted scientific theories of all time, Nicolaus Copernicus's heliostatic (stationary sun) theory of the solar system, which has undergone continual change since it was first proposed in 1543: Copernicus called for the planets to move in uniform circular motion around the sun, slightly displaced from the center.
Using observations by Tycho Brahe, Johannes Kepler revised the Copernican model, discarding the ancient dogma of circular motion, which did not fit the data. Instead, he guessed that the planets in fact move in elliptical orbits.In his influential work endorsing the Copernican theory, Galileo ignored Kepler's corrections and opted for circular motion. Notoriously, the Catholic Church condemned Galileo for heresy. But the church was actually correct that he had no basis for claiming the heliocentric theory was true, rather than simply an interpretation of experience.Galileo's picture of space was superseded by Newton's and later by Einstein's, which also
will doubtless be revised.
Even something as basic as the elliptical motion of the planets is a vast oversimplification. There are no closed curves in space, since the solar system is moving around the center of the galaxy; the galaxy is moving within the local cluster; and the local cluster is also moving.Although we still call the conventional picture of the solar system Copernican astronomy, there is effectively no resemblance between astronomy today and Copernicus's 1543 theory of the heavens. The same is also true of other theories, such as the atomic theory of matter. All scientific theories are in a state of ceaseless revision, which raises the question of what reality "really" is.
As the contemporary philosopher of science Mary Hesse has pointed out, the lesson of the history of science seems to be that the theories we currently hold to be true are as likely to be overturned as the theories they replaced!
Sharpen Your Understanding of What Science Is
The uncertainty about the status of scientific knowledge and about the objectivity of the scientific enterprise led to a broad assault on science in the late 20th century by sociologists, philosophers, and historians, many connected with the postmodern movement. The lectures covering this attack and the ensuing counterattack by scientists are some of the most thrilling in the course and involve a number of figures whom Professor Goldman knows personally.Of one of the firebrands in this conflict, the late Viennese philosopher of science Paul Feyerabend, Professor Goldman says, "I myself took a seminar with Feyerabend when he was teaching at Berkeley in the early 1960s. … Feyerabend was not really off the wall,
although he was often depicted that way. … He too recognized, as everyone must, that after all, science does work and science is knowledge of a sort. It's just not the absolute knowledge that scientists and philosophers have historically claimed that it is."

New forms of governing and managing public schools have proliferated in recent years, spawning the establishment and growth of companies contracted to operate public schools. Among these education management organizations (EMOs), the largest and most visible is Edison Schools. In 2000, Edison asked RAND to analyze its achievement outcomes and design implementation. RAND designed an evaluation to address the following research questions:

* What are Edison's strategies for promoting student achievement in the schools it manages?
* How are Edison's strategies implemented in those schools?
* How does Edison's management of schools affect student achievement?
* What factors explain differences in achievement trends among Edison schools?

The resources and accountability systems that constitute Edison's design represent a coherent, comprehensive, and ambitious strategy to address key elements relevant to providing high-quality education. The best-functioning Edison schools demonstrate the promise inherent in Edison's model, but this monograph reports considerable variation in the extent to which the schools realize the Edison ideal.

Average rates of student proficiency in Edison schools improve over time. On average, gains of Edison schools during the first three years of Edison operation do not exceed the gains of matched conventional public schools, but Edison results improve in years four and five. Edisonâ€™s average long-term gains are comparable to or better than those of matched conventional public schools.

Analysis of a number of case-study Edison schools suggests that schools that effectively implement the wide-ranging Edison curriculum, establish Edison's professional environment, and operate with strong instructional leaders under limited constraints have positive achievement results. Given that Edison's results have not been uniformly positive, this monograph suggests some actions that Edison and its current and future clients can take to promote greater consistency of results, in terms of both implementation and student achievement.

I center the presentation around various software projects. In each project I first describe a problem to be solved. Then I discuss what the program should do, what it should look like, and how it should react to user input. Based on that I build a scaffolding that captures the structure of the program without implementing its functionality. Finally, I implement the functionality, component by component.

In programming, as in life, there is never a single way to do something. That’s why being able to argue about various solutions is extremely important. Programmers who don’t know how to argue end up bitter and frustrated. I remember my own frustrations when faced with an argument like, "Because it’s always been done like this." In this book I argue a lot. I try to find the pros and cons of every solution, and in many cases I manage to settle on something I consider "elegant." However, I never use elegance as an objective criterion. I believe that one can always uncover some very practical arguments that are hidden behind the subjective impression of "elegance." An elegant solution in many cases catches a very good abstraction or generalization. It results in code that is easy to understand, modify, and debug.

Finally, in this book I emphasize the human factor in programming. My credo is "programs are written for programmers, not computers." Programmers want to write better programs not in order to make them more understandable to computers, but to make them more readable to humans. You might be holding this book in a bookstore, asking yourself whether you should buy it. Or maybe you are in your employers library, wondering whether you should invest time in reading it. I know you dont have time, so Ill cut to the chase. If you have ever asked yourself how to write higher-level programs in C++, how to cope with the avalanche of irrelevant details that plague even the cleanest design, or how to build reusable components that you dont have to hack into each time you take them to your next application, then this book is for you.

Imagine the following scenario. You come from a design meeting with a couple of printed diagrams, scribbled with your annotations. Okay, the event type passed between these objects is not char anymore; its int. You change one line of code. The smart pointers to Widget are too slow; they should go unchecked. You change one line of code. The object factory needs to support the new Gadget class just added by another department. You change one line of code.

You changed the design. Compile. Link. Done.

Well, there is something wrong with this scenario, isnt there? A much more likely scenario is this: You come from the meeting in a hurry because you have a pile of work to do. You fire a global search. You perform surgery on code. You add code. You introduce bugs. You remove the bugs . . . thats the way a programmers job is, right? Although this book cannot possibly promise you the first scenario, it is nonetheless a resolute step in that direction. It tries to present C++ as a newly discovered language for software architects.

Traditionally, code is the most detailed and intricate aspect of a software system. Historically, in spite of various levels of language support for design methodologies (such as object orientation), a significant gap persisted between the blueprints of a program and its code because the code must take care of the ultimate details of the implementation and of many ancillary tasks. The intent of the design is, more often than not, dissolved in a sea of quirks.

This book presents a collection of reusable design artifacts, called generic components, together with the techniques that make them possible. These generic components bring their users the well-known benefits of libraries, but in the broader space of system architecture. The coding techniques and the implementations provided focus on tasks and issues that traditionally fall in the area of design, activities usually done before coding. Because of their high level, generic components make it possible to map intricate architectures to code in unusually expressive, terse, and easy-to-maintain ways.

Three elements are reunited here: design patterns, generic programming, and C++. These elements are combined to achieve a very high rate of reuse, both horizontally and vertically. On the horizontal dimension, a small amount of library code implements a combinatorialand essentially open-endednumber of structures and behaviors. On the vertical dimension, the generality of these components makes them applicable to a vast range of programs.

This book owes much to design patterns, powerful solutions to ever-recurring problems in object-oriented development. Design patterns are distilled pieces of good designrecipes for sound, reusable solutions to problems that can be encountered in manycontexts. Design patterns concentrate on providing a suggestive lexicon for designs to be conveyed. They describe the problem, a time-proven solution with its variants, and the consequences of choosing each variant of that solution. Design patterns go above and beyond anything a programming language, no matter how advanced, could possibly express. By following and combining certain design patterns, the components presented in this book tend to address a large category of concrete problems.

Generic programming is a paradigm that focuses on abstracting types to a narrow collection of functional requirements and on implementing algorithms in terms of these requirements. Because algorithms define a strict and narrow interface to the types they operate on, the same algorithm can be used against a wide collection of types. The implementations in this book use generic programming techniques to achieve a minimal commitment to specificity, extraordinary terseness, and efficiency that rivals carefully handcrafted code.

C++ is the only implementation tool used in this book. You will not find in this book code that implements nifty windowing systems, complex networking libraries, or clever logging mechanisms. Instead, you will find the fundamental components that make it easy to implement all of the above, and much more. C++ has the breadth necessary to make this possible. Its underlying C memory model ensures raw performance, its support for polymorphism enables object-oriented techniques, and its templates unleash an incredible code generation machine. Templates pervade all the code in the book because they allow close cooperation between the user and the library. The user of the library literally controls he way code is generated, in ways constrained by the library. The role of a generic component library is to allow user-specified types and behaviors to be combined with generic components in a sound design. Because of the static nature of the technique used, errors in mixing and matching the appropriate pieces are usually caught during compile time.

Generic components do not form a framework. In fact, their approach is complementarywhereas a framework defines interdependent classes to foster a specific object model, generic components are lightweight design artifacts that are independent of each other, yet can be mixed and matched freely. They can be of great help in implementing frameworks.

Audience

The intended audience of this book falls into two main categories. The first category is that of experienced C++ programmers who want to master the most modern library writing techniques. The book presents new, powerful C++ idioms that have surprising capabilities, some of which werent even thought possible. These idioms are of great help in writing high-level libraries. Intermediate C++ programmers who want to go a step further will certainly find the book useful, too, especially if they invest a bit of perseverance. Although pretty hard-core C++ code is sometimes presented, it is thoroughly explained.

The second category consists of busy programmers who need to get the job done without undergoing a steep learning investment. They can skim the most intricate details of implementation and concentrate on using the provided library. Each chapter has an introductory explanation and ends with a Quick Facts section. Programmers will find these features a useful reference in understanding and using the components. The components can be understood in isolation, are very powerful yet safe, and are a joy to use.

You need to have a solid working experience with C++ and, above all, the desire to learn more. A degree of familiarity with templates and the Standard Template Library (STL) is desirable.

Having an acquaintance with design patterns (Gamma et al. 1995) is recommended but not mandatory. The patterns and idioms applied in the book are described in detail. However, this book is not a pattern bookit does not attempt to treat patterns in full generality. Because patterns are presented from the pragmatic standpoint of a library writer, even readers interested mostly in patterns may find the perspective refreshing, if constrained.

Loki

The book describes an actual C++ library called Loki. Loki is the god of wit and mischief in Norse mythology, and the authors hope is that the librarys originality and flexibility will remind readers of the playful Norse god. All the elements of the library live in the namespace Loki. The namespace is not mentioned in the coding examples because it would have unnecessarily increased indentation and the size of the examples. Loki is freely available; you can download it from awl/cseng/titles/0-201-70431-5.

Except for its threading part, Loki is written exclusively in standard C++. This, alas, means that many current compilers cannot cope with parts of it. I implemented and tested Loki using Metrowerks CodeWarrior Pro 6.0 and Comeau C++ 4.2.38, both on Windows. It is likely that KAI C++ wouldnt have any problem with the code, either. As vendors release new, better compiler versions, you will be able to exploit everything Loki has to offer.

Lokis code and the code samples presented throughout the book use a popular coding standard originated by Herb Sutter. Im sure you will pick it up easily. In a nutshell,
